Gerald Vernon-Jackson has been a Councillor in Portsmouth since 2003 where he represents Milton ward and lives in Southsea. He was born and brought up in Hampshire and has both a BA and MSc degree. He was Leader of the Council from 2004 to 2014, and regained the position in 2018. As Leader of the Council Gerald is responsible for Portsmouth International Port, which is the largest municipal Port in the country. He is also a Director of Portico Shipping.
Between 2005-2011 Gerald was LGA Liberal Democrat Deputy Group Leader, becoming Group Leader and LGA Vice-Chairman (member of LGA Executive and Leadership Board) from 2011-2017. Since 2017, Gerald has been Chair of the LGA Culture Tourism and Sport Board, a Member of the LGA Executive, and a Non-Executive Director of Local Partnerships Board. Gerald also sits on several outside bodies. He is Vice-Chair of Key Cities, a Director of the Solent Local Economic Partnership, and a member of the Tourism Alliance Board.
Prior to being elected to Portsmouth City Council, Gerald was a member at West Berkshire Council. Gerald is a member of the National Executive of the Liberal Democrats. He has worked for several organisations including IDEA, SOLACE, Leadership Centre, ALDC and Westminster Foundation for Democracy. He has also worked for David Rendel MP and for the Liberal Democrats nationally.
